Questo progetto nasce dal desiderio di rendere omaggio ai grandi sassofonisti che hanno reso celebre e unico questo strumento nella storia del jazz, dagli anni ’20 fino ai giorni nostri.
Il panorama dei sassofonisti che hanno segnato il Novecento è vastissimo e costellato di talenti, più o meno conosciuti. Citarli tutti in un solo concerto sarebbe impossibile, ma concentrandosi su quei musicisti che hanno influenzato profondamente l’evoluzione del jazz, è possibile tracciare un viaggio affascinante attraverso le diverse epoche e i loro protagonisti.
Dall’energia del dixieland degli anni ’20 con Sidney Bechet, alla Swing Era con Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster e le inconfondibili sonorità di Johnny Hodges nell’orchestra di Duke Ellington. Si prosegue con le atmosfere del Cool Jazz, rappresentate da Paul Desmond, Lee Konitz e Gerry Mulligan, per poi arrivare alla rivoluzione del Be-Bop di Charlie Parker. Il viaggio continua attraverso l’Hard Bop con Sonny Rollins, il jazz modale di John Coltrane, fino alle sonorità più moderne di Michael Brecker e Joshua Redman.
Molti altri meriterebbero di essere inclusi in questo percorso e verranno citati nel reading che accompagnerà il concerto. Il racconto si arricchirà di aneddoti tratti dal libro Natura morta con custodia di sax e da note biografiche di alcuni dei più influenti sassofonisti della storia del jazz.

This project was born from the desire to pay tribute to the great saxophonists who have made this instrument unique and legendary in the history of jazz, from the 1920s to the present day.
The world of influential saxophonists of the past century is vast and full of talent, both well-known and lesser-known. It would be impossible to mention them all in a single concert, but by focusing on those musicians who profoundly shaped the development of jazz, we can create a fascinating journey through different eras and their key figures.
From the energy of Dixieland in the 1920s with Sidney Bechet, to the Swing Era featuring Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, and the unmistakable sound of Johnny Hodges in Duke Ellington’s orchestra. The journey continues through the cool atmospheres of Cool Jazz, represented by Paul Desmond, Lee Konitz, and Gerry Mulligan, leading to the revolutionary Be-Bop era of Charlie Parker. It then moves through the Hard Bop period with Sonny Rollins, the modal jazz innovations of John Coltrane, and finally reaches the modern sounds of Michael Brecker and Joshua Redman.
Many other saxophonists deserve to be part of this journey, and they will be mentioned in the reading that accompanies the concert. The narrative will be enriched with anecdotes from the book But Beautiful (Natura morta con custodia di sax in Italian) and biographical notes on some of the most influential saxophonists in jazz history.
